ADCG is offering a certificate course for attendees to become a Certified Data Officer (CDO). The CDO course expands the role of privacy professionals, information security personnel, and risk managers and teaches them how to manage all of the data in an organization, not just data subject to privacy laws, such as personally identifiable information (PII), health data, or non-public financial data.

CDOs are responsible for data management across the organization, including the protection of confidential / proprietary data and intellectual property. They work with business managers, privacy and legal personnel, information security officers, and others to ensure appropriate controls and protections are in place to secure the data and make it available when needed. CDOs also may work with internal or external personnel on data analytics, boards and C-suites on data governance, and assist with digital transformation efforts.

PwC’s 2021 Chief Data Officer Study of 2,500 of the largest publicly traded companies indicated that less than a quarter of the respondents have a chief data officer in a senior executive role. The study notes that this new role is important to “maximizing the operational and commercial potential of data.”

The organizations and personnel on the front lines of the CDO role will enjoy a competitive advantage both in operations and innovative uses of their data and in incident response. When an organization only inventories and puts controls around data subject to privacy laws, they leave a significant amount of digital assets unattended and, often, unprotected. This hinders incident response, increases business interruption losses, and can harm the reputation of the organization.

The CDO certificate course will enable organizations to protect their “privacy data” plus the data that is critical for operations and valuable to the company. The program is designed to help all sizes of companies from all industry sectors take what they have already developed for data management and expand it using best practices and standards.

The CDO course covers:

  • The components of a Data Management Program (DMP)
  • The roles and responsibilities of the CDO
  • Data compliance requirements
  • Leading best practices and standards
  • Key activities in managing risks to data

It includes interactive workshops that enable participants to apply what they have learned to real scenarios. After completion of the course, participants will be qualified to lead the function within their organization.

An exam follows the course. Participants who pass the exam will receive a frameable certificate and digital badge for their e-signature and will become part of ADCG’s CDO Network.
